FRANK T. WILLIAMS IV

JAZZ DRUMMER || COMPOSER || EDUCATOR

Frank T. Williams IV has been immersed in the world of music for virtually his entire life. His journey as a drummer began at the age of five when he received his very first drum set—a gift that would ignite a lifelong passion and lay the foundation for an accomplished career spanning more than 40 years as a professional jazz percussionist. From those early beginnings, Mr. Williams developed a deep appreciation for rhythm, artistry, and the rich traditions of jazz, steadily honing his craft into the dynamic and expressive style for which he is known today.

Over the course of his distinguished career, Mr. Williams has performed, toured, recorded, and shared the stage with an impressive roster of jazz luminaries and legends. His musical collaborations include renowned artists such as Nat Adderley, Douglas Carn, John Lamb, Marcus Printup and The Marcus Printup Quartet, Michael Thomas and The Michael Thomas Quintet, Andrew White, Marcus Roberts, Eric Lewis, Benito Gonzalez, and Ben Williams, among many others. These experiences have allowed him to perform in a wide range of musical settings, enriching his artistry while earning the respect of fellow musicians and audiences alike.

Today, Mr. Williams serves as the primary drummer for the acclaimed Michael Thomas Quintet, a group that has maintained an extraordinary musical partnership for 30+ years. The ensemble's longevity is a testament not only to its exceptional musicianship but also to the deep artistic chemistry shared among its members. In 2010, the quintet received a first-round Grammy ballot entry for its celebrated recording, Live at Twins Jazz Volume 2, further solidifying its place within the contemporary jazz landscape. Continuing its legacy of excellence, the group is released its newest recording, 25, commemorating a remarkable quarter-century of performing and creating music together.

In addition to his work with the Michael Thomas Quintet, Mr. Williams performs regularly with acclaimed pianist and composer Bob Murad. His collaboration with Murad extends beyond live performance, as he appears as a guest artist drummer on Murad's recent recording, The Observer. These ongoing musical partnerships reflect Mr. Williams' versatility, professionalism, and commitment to artistic growth.

Beyond the concert stage and recording studio, Mr. Williams maintains an active freelance career, performing with a variety of local and national musical acts across numerous genres and settings. His adaptability and broad musical experience have made him a sought-after performer among fellow musicians and organizations alike. Equally important to him is the role of educator and mentor. Mr. Williams operates a private percussion studio consisting of approximately 10 to 15 students at any given time, providing personalized instruction that emphasizes technical excellence, musicality, discipline, and confidence.

His dedication to teaching has produced extraordinary results. Every private student of Mr. Williams who has continued studying through high school has been accepted to college on a full music scholarship—an achievement that speaks volumes about both the quality of his instruction and his commitment to helping young musicians realize their fullest potential. Through his mentorship, students not only develop as percussionists but also gain the skills, work ethic, and artistic understanding necessary to succeed at the collegiate level and beyond.

Academically, Mr. Williams combines his extensive performance experience with a strong educational foundation. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from Florida A&M University and later obtained a Master of Arts degree in Education from Gratz College. With more than 30+ years of experience as an educator, he brings a rare and valuable perspective to every classroom, clinic, workshop, and private lesson. His dual expertise as both a seasoned performer and accomplished educator enables him to connect practical musicianship with effective teaching methodologies, making him a highly respected clinician and instructor.
